Brown Bag Discussion: Illegal Immigration

We held our 1st Brown Bag discussion of the semester today. The topic was Illegal Immigration. It was a lively, active, and respectful discussion.

Students shared a range of opinions on the issue and many aspects of the issue came up including:


  • The Arizona Law
  • Historical Context of Immigration
  • UN Stance on World Migration
  • Businesses and their influence on Immigration
  • Naturalization Process
  • Liberty vs. Security - how do we balance liberty and security?
  • Discrimination
  • Is it in the United States best interest to allow immigration?
  • Terrorist threat
  • Racial Profiling
  • Police Enforcement
  • Language

  1. Personally, I keep looking at the debate in a historical context. This is not a new issue, it just keeps shifting which group of people we won't allow to be here. Native Americans, Chinese, Irish, Southern Europeans, and now Latin Americans. So, with that in mind, are we ever going to be OKAY with any one being here who wasn't born here? My 2 cents.
